Hippo Home Insurance
Hippo Insurance has a tech-forward approach to home and condo insurance. The company caters to tech-savvy consumers who value a home insurance company that offers comprehensive digital tools. Hippo also offers a free smart home kit to eligible customers, with a discount applied when it’s activated.
Going with a tech-first approach, Hippo offers higher coverage limits for computers and home office equipment, which is ideal for someone working from a home office. Moreover, it also covers electronics, and essential staff, like a babysitter or cleaner.
Here’s what you can expect from a standard Hippo home insurance policy:
| Dwelling coverage | Helps pay for repairs after you cover the deductible if your main house is damaged by a covered event. Hippo calculates this coverage based on how much it would cost to rebuild your home today. They also offer extended replacement cost coverage, which provides extra funds if repairs cost more than expected. Your roof will be covered either at replacement cost or actual cash value, depending on its age and condition. |
| Other structures | Covers attached/detached structures, like a shed or garage. |
| Personal property | Protects your personal property like clothing, appliances, etc. against fire, theft, and more. |
| Liability | Covers medical expenses, lost wages, legal fees, and death benefits if an event with a third-party result in injury, personal or property damage. |
| Additional living expenses | Also known as loss of use, it covers any extra expenses arising while displaced from the home. For example, food costs, hotels and storage. |
Additionally, Hippo also includes extra coverage along with the standard HO3 protections, including:
| Home office | Covers home office equipment, such as computers and printers, for up to $10,000. |
| Domestic workers | This workers’ compensation coverage protects you if a household worker, like a babysitter or gardener, is injured on your property. |
| Water backup | Covers damage caused by drain overflow, or when water backs up. |
| Electronics | Covers expensive electronics, such as laptops, TVs, up to $8,000 in optional coverage. |
| Miscellaneous | Enhances your personal property coverage by covering up to $5,000 for the theft of jewelry, watches or other precious and semi-precious stones. |
Optional Endorsement
While Hippo provides comprehensive coverage, everyone has different needs. If you want additional protection, here are the optional endorsements that you can include in your Hippo hoe insurance policy:
| Equipment breakdown | Hippo offers up to $100,00 to cover home equipment that you need to either repair or replace. It comes with a $500 deductible for appliances less than 15 years old and a $1,500 deductible for older products. |
| Water backup | Your standard water backup coverage can be doubled up to $20,000 with this rider. |
| Service line | While service line maintenance is taken care of, you are responsible for different expenses, like excavation, repair and more. This rider provides up to $10,000 to cover these costs. |
| Valuables | If you have a collection of valuables, Hippo provides up to $2,000 to protect items such as jewelry and watches from covered perils. You can also get a rider to enhance your jewelry and watches protection by an additional $5,000. |
| Mortgage payment protection | Hippo also has plans that include mortgage payment protection up to $1,500 per month to assist you with your mortgage while your home is uninhabitable. |
Hippo Home Insurance Cost
Your home insurance rates differ based on various factors, including:
- Location
- Property size and type
- Property age
- Personal information
- Coverage amount.
However, it costs $2,348 per year on average for a standard Hippo homeowners’ policy.

Hippo Insurance Discounts
While Hippo doesn’t offer discounts for bundling policies or purchasing a new home, it provides discounts for setting up your home with modern technology that can help reduce your risk of a covered loss.
| Existing smart-home devices | You can save more if you’ve installed professionally monitored fire or theft alarm systems, water sensors or valve closure devices. |
| Automatic sprinkler system | You can reduce your premiums by properly maintaining an automatic home sprinkler system. A full system can get you a bigger reduction. |
| Self-monitored smart home | Hippo has a partnership with Ring to offer a discount for smart home monitoring. Having a smart security system may help you qualify for this discount. |
| Loss-free discount | Offered to eligible customers who haven’t had a claim in 3 or 5 years, depending on the experience period. |
| Hail-resistant roof discount | Eligible consumers can save more for installing impact-resistant shingles |

Best insurance company I have worked with. Very responsive and extremely helpful. The best part, create a quote online in a few minutes without having to talk to an agent who won’t listen and stop talking. Keep it up!
I’ve been with Hippo for a long time now and to this point they’ve been exceptionally prompt to my needs. An excellent company to have insurance with..
hese people came through for me last minute during my home buying experience. I was having trouble finding someone to insure me because 1 had 3 loans against my home. Thank you, Hippo!
I had a bad experience with Hippo Insurance. They did not provide the necessary information to my other insurance company, which resulted in my policy getting cancelled. I also found their customer support to be unhelpful in resolving the issue.

Hippo Insurance: Verdict
Overall, we award Hippo Insurance an overall rating of 2 out of 5 stars. While it offers its services in most states and has a tech-first outlook on home insurance, Hippo doesn’t offer other insurance products. If you’re looking for multiple policy types, this may not be the best option. Hippo’s home insurance seems specifically ideal for customers who are fans of smart home technology and like to keep certain insurance types separate.
We’re not giving them a higher score due to a lack of policy options, and the volume of negative reviews over positive customer experiences. However, we do recommend getting the help of your insurance agent to look more into Hippo Insurance.
