What Does MetLife Insurance Offer?
- Group Term Life Insurance
You can buy MetLife’s term life insurance for a specific period, generally between 10 and 30 years. This also means that it guarantees a death benefit to beneficiaries but only if you were to die during the specified period. Once the policy period ends, the coverage will too. Term life insurance is more affordable than permanent life insurance and is more than enough for most people.
However, MetLife uses underwriting companies, so your coverage might not be directly from MetLife.
- Group Universal Life Insurance
Universal life insurance doesn’t expire as long as you pay the minimum premiums. It is more flexible with a tax-deferred cash value and lower premiums than whole life insurance. MetLife offers a portable universal life coverage, so you can take your policy with you when you leave your job. However, it is only available as a group plan.
- Group Variable Universal Life Insurance
MetLife’s variable universal life insurance option allows you to invest cash value in the stock market. Your policy could potentially lapse if your investments perform poorly and your cash value declines. The added risk factor makes this one of the riskiest forms of life insurance. While it does offer a chance to invest along protecting your family’s financial future, it is a complex financial product. If you want to learn more about this policy, you can contact the company directly.
- Available Riders
Since you can only get MetLife policies through employers, there are different riders available to let you customize your policy based on the agreement with each employer. Here are a few riders available at MetLife:
-
- Accidental Death Benefit: This provides an additional death benefit if the insured dies in an accident.
- Child Benefit Rider: Typically provides term coverage for all your eligible children. You can convert this into a permanent policy for your child later on.
- Waiver of Premium: While there is a waiting period before you can waive your premiums, this rider allows you to pause your premium payments if you become totally disabled and unable to work. j
- Terminal Illness Rider: This is an accelerated benefit rider (ABR) at no cost, which lets you access a certain portion of your death benefit if you’re diagnosed with a terminal illness. It can help cover the cost for treatments but will reduce the death benefit your beneficiaries receive.
- Chronic Illness Rider: If you’re diagnosed with chronic conditions, this ABR lets you access a portion of your death benefit before your death. You’d usually have to lose the ability to perform at least two daily living functions or suffer a severe cognitive impairment.

getting run around.
My husband died in October and had a 25K life insurance policy that has been in place for years. I have called several times and have yet to get a check. I have not paid his funeral bill and will be turned over to collections if not paid in the next 30 days. My husband was young, and his death was completely unexpected and sudden. It’s sad that a widow has to be treated this way on top of losing a beloved husband of over 30 years.
MetLife is NOT patient centric
MetLife does not consider any circumstances that influence the frequency of a dental cleaning appointment. They clearly look for any technicality to deny claims purely to save money, NOT to ensure patients receive the care needed and recommended. This company is not patient centric and that is shameful for the healthcare industry.
I don’t know why Metlife is rated so bad here! I think people before taking insurance are not reading terms and conditions! metlife never had dental cover or health insurance! Where are people getting this?
they cover broken bones, hospital stays related to accidents and accidental death! never had a problem with them! got a broken arm twice and both times they paid out within a week! I’ve been with them since 2016 and their premiums never went up! will stay with them! PEOPLE read t&c before taking out a policy! it’s not all in one insurance!!! only accidental!
Have MetLife through a work policy – although didn’t realize this until I needed to claim. I thought it was with AIG. After reading the reviews I was concerned about making a claim, however my doctor completed the paperwork thoroughly. I made sure what I was claiming with was covered within my policy and the process was swift and efficient. I received a considerable payout within a couple of days. No burden placed on myself to provide additional information – other than a copy of ID. I found them to be extremely proficient and the money will go a long way to ease a difficult personal situation. Would recommend their services.
Metlife Dental uses social security number as a member number and has no way to choose/assign a different number. This is a very poor practice that puts members’ personally identifiable information at risk.

MetLife Insurance Review: Conclusion
MetLife certainly offers good benefits with its life insurance. It has a portable group coverage, living benefits and convertible term coverage. It may be a viable choice if you’re only looking at life insurance options.
Its poor customer satisfaction is what deters us from making a strong recommendation. There is a greater ratio of unsatisfied customers. Moreover, it doesn’t offer individual insurance. So, if you’re looking for individual coverage, you might want to look elsewhere for a company that suits your better.
